Under the moniker Ducktails, Real Estate guitarist Matthew Mondanile has almost perfected the lazy, psychedelia-laced surf-pop sound. His third release, Ducktails III: Arcade Dynamics, has a charming, lo-fi quality courtesy of Mondanile’s simple yet beautiful melodies and jangly guitars. Layers of sound wash across one another to form loosely woven songs, some held tighter by a more prominent guitar riff, others more equally tied together by a mix of random effects. What Ducktails lacks in pop structure it makes up for with dreamy atmospherics. Highlights include “Art Vandelay,” a catchy pop song that reeks of nostalgia; “Killin’ the Vibe,” which features vocals from Panda Bear and Dent May; and the rambling instrumental closing track, “Porch Projector.” – Written by DBosket
