Gospel Music – Duettes

  • January 11, 2011

Gospel Music, a side project of Owen Holmes of Black Kids, has released the aptly named Duettes – a five-track EP of duets with Holmes and four guests from a smattering of bands. The EP starts off with “I Miss the Shit Out of You,” sung with French singer/actress SoKo, that has Holmes waxing nostalgic about “drinking homebrew on the roof,” but SoKo responding that it’s “not enough for me to move back to Florida, back with those rubes.” Well said. Everything on Duettes has a loose, lo-fi feel that suits how Holmes’ gravelly, monotone delivery contrasts with the more melodic vocals of Tracyanne Campbell from Camera Obscura and Cassie Ramone of Vivian Girls. Darren Hayman of Hefner also joins in for a double dose of dude on the ode to homebrew, “Reinheitsgebot,” which is German for “German Beer Purity Law.” – Written by DBosket
