Hot Club de Paris – Free the Pterodactyl 3

  • March 22, 2011

Liverpudlians Hot Club de Paris recently turned out the full length Free The Pterodactyl 3, a cheeky set of 12 pop songs that build upon their last two EPs. Five years on since their recording debut, the indie band leans towards angular power pop with a math rock bent (atypical rhythmic structures, angular melodies, and dissonant chords) and indulge in fluffy but fun lyrics [“I turn my frown upside down because you told me to”]. The two Smith brothers and their friend Paul Rafferty play with verve and let their distinct British accents shine through on songs with titles as lighthearted as the pop they play: “The Rise & Fall of The High School [Suicide] Cluster Band”, “Dog Tired At The Spring Dance Marathon”, and “Three Albums In & Still No Ballad.” Experimentation is in full play, as heard on “Fuck You, The Truth!” – a song that commences with almost an entire minute of triangle/bell tinging electronica before moving into vocals with a rap delivery and a twist on call and response. Check out Free The Pterodactyl 3 for fun pop with a dissonant edge. – Written by SMarx
