Jim White – Misfit’s Jubilee

  • November 12, 2020

TSinger/songwriter and Americana music stalwart Jim White follows-up 2017’s Waffles, Triangles and Jesus, with his eighth album and his “most upbeat, hallucinogenic record to date,” Misfit’s Jubilee. White’s music has always been hard to pigeon-hole; it’s genre-bending, idiosyncratic, poetic, humorous and often quirky and combines elements of folk, rockabilly, country, gospel, blues, and off-kilter pop. Misfits Jubilee features frenetic, blue-collar tales and contemplations that explore life, spirituality, love, and heartbreak alongside lively, hook-laden arrangements. Album highlights include: the bluesy “Where Would I Be”; the Beck-esque “Smart Ass Reply”; the jaunty shuffle “Wonders Never Cease”; the indie rocker “Fighting My Ghosts Again”; the beautiful anthemic track “The Mystery of You”; the closing socio-political track “The Divided States of America”; indie folk-rocker “Sum of What We’ve Been”; and the pop/jazz-tinged “Wonders Never Cease.” Ever since his 1997 debut Wrong-Eyed Jesus! White has continued to experiment and push the limits of Americana/roots music and that’s no different with Misfits Jubilee – perhaps his most accessible album to date. – Written by JFelton
