Saskatchewan folk/roots duo Kacy & Clayton are joined by New Zealand singer/songwriter Marlon Williamson on their latest release, Plastic Bouquet. Marlon Williams is a mid-20th century country, soul, and pop crooner who first heard Kacy & Clayton’s traditionalist folk music via Spotify during a tour of Europe in 2017. Kacy and Clayton’s music impressed Williams so much that he messaged Anderson and Linthicum and became friends, later deciding to make an album together. Over a three-week period, the trio wrote and recorded most of what would become the LP. Anderson and Williams wrote, produced and performed all the vocals on Plastic Bouquet while Linthicum primarily focused on guitar and keyboard. The result of this collaboration is a beautiful, uncluttered, and polished set of songs. Album highlights include: the twangy waltz “Isn’t It”; the warped, acoustic “Devil’s Daughter”; the mournful ethereal track “I Wonder Why”; the gorgeous melancholy tribute to a New Zealand river “The Arahura”; the slinky ‘60s-flavored song “Light of Love”; the slow-burning country tune “Old-Fashioned Man”; and the joyful upbeat song “I’m Gonna Break It.” Kacy and Clayton and Marlon Williams make Plastic Bouquet sound so effortless, like they have been preforming and collaborating together all their lives. Plastic Bouquet is easily one of my favorite albums of last year and, in my opinion, a contemporary classic. – Written by JFelton
