Kill County – The Year of Getting By

  • March 29, 2011

The Year of Getting By may be Oklahoma’s Kill County’s second album, but the alt-country band wasted no time getting it done. Recorded at a friends’ house in two weeks, the DIY atmosphere lends itself well to the spare, stripped down sound, allowing ambient noises to rise up as well as an expansiveness which can be heard on the tender track “My Boots On.” With rich, raspy vocals and a slew of traditional instruments like banjo, harmonica, piano, pedal steel, dobro, fiddle, bass, drums, and or course, guitar, Kill County’s The Year of Getting By is authentic take on Americana country music. Standouts include “The Train, The Drink and The Dawn” and “Coffee Black”; don’t miss the hidden track at the end, a lively, toe-tapping, hollering full band sing-along. – Written by JFelton
