Mariel Buckley – Driving in the Dark

  • September 21, 2018

Calgary, Alberta-based singer-songwriter Mariel Buckley’s gritty sophomore album, Driving In The Dark, is a confident step forward in the evolution of her sound. Buckley teamed up with producer and singer/songwriter Leeroy Stagger (Carolyn Mark, The Wardens) for this melancholy mix of dark Americana and traditional country songs. Driving in the Dark is sharp, incisive, and more thoroughly steeped in roots than her country-leaning debut and was inspired by the experience of loss and an existential look at mortality. Notable tracks include: the angsty confessional “Wait”; the gorgeous first single “Rose Coloured Frames”; a song about love and tolerance “Jumping the Fence”; the reflective heartbreaker “Heart is on Fire”; the self-preservation/healing track “One Time Asking”; the harrowing tale in “Stray Dogs”; and the emotive title track. Mariel Buckley’s Driving In The Dark is a captivating album that leaves you wanting more. – Written by JFelton
