Patina – Hard Luck Sound

Nashville country singer/songwriter Margo Price is known for writing biting and tender country songs — a reputation she’s built via her first two albums – but for her third album, How Rumors Get Started, Price goes a different direction with more rock and roll. Teaming up with Sturgill Simpson in Hollywood’s legendary EastWest Studios, Price is backed by a killer studio band that includes: Chavez guitarist Matt Sweeney (Johnny Cash, Cat Power and a bunch of others), bassist Pino Palladino (D’Angelo, Gary Numan), drummer James Gadson (Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye), and keyboardist Benmont Tench (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers). The 10 song set is about “motherhood or the mythologies of stardom, Nashville gentrification or the national healthcare crisis, relationships or growing pains.” Price continues, “This album is a postcard of a landscape of a moment in time….It’s not political but maybe it will provide an escape or relief to someone who needs it. Sending love to everyone out there and hope I see you down the highway.” Standout tracks include: The country rocker about two teenage runaways “Letting Me Down”; the fuzzed-out rocker “Twinkle Twinkle”; and the previously unreleased Marty Stuart inspired single, “Stone Me.” Altogether, Price has dropped another compelling album in her accomplished discography. – Written by JFelton
