Seryn – This Is Where We Are

  • November 8, 2011

At the apex of the Fort Worth and Dallas, TX triangle is Denton, and it is there that we find one of the hottest acts from SXSW 2011, Seryn. This young quintet spins arduously layered instrumentation on their debut album of American folk-pop, This Is Where We Are. In an impressive balancing act, the five effortlessly incorporate thirteen distinct instruments, including accordion, banjo, bass, bells, guitar, cello, drums, pump organ, trumpet, ukulele, violin and even such rarities as bird chirps and bear roars. While this could easily devolve into chaos and cacophony in lesser hands, Seryn sticks with a well-crafted arrangements and thoughtful and at times subdued delivery, whether it is a deep harmonization in a sentimental ballad or a catchy chorus in a lively foot stomper. This is Where We Are is a great debut album; be sure to listen to this gem. – Written by SMarx
