Sonny and The Sunsets – Longtime Companion

  • June 7, 2012

Sonny & the Sunsets, fronted by San Francisco playwright/songsmith/troubadour Sonny Smith, have previously blended 50’s, 60’s and 70’s pop, soul and folk while meshing elements of contemporary indie music. But this time around, they are all country – a genre well suited for a record commemorating the break-up of Sunny and his girlfriend of ten years. The Sunsets (featuring members of Thee Oh Sees, The Fresh & Onlys, Citay) are joined by Sonny’s special country band, The Fuckaroos and provide the soundtrack to Sonny’s internal monologue, fueled by such sentiments as revealed by track titles, “Pretend You Love Me”, “Year of the Cock”, and “My Mind Messed Up”. Longtime Companion features ten tracks of Smith’s mellow vintage country with storytelling that is dark, humorous and clever; it may be all tear in my beer, but with emotion, sass, and style. – Written by JFelton
