Since the break-up of Stephen Malkmus’ influential ‘90s indie rock band Pavement, not much has changed as Malkmus continues to explore a kaleidoscope of richly layered guitars, poetic lyrical play, melodic hooks, fuzzed-out reverb, off-key vocal affectation and a penchant for Zappa-esque psychedelic experimentation. Sparkle Hard – the latest release from Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks – is a warmer and more approachable album than their past few releases and features a polished collection of indie pop gems and adventurous sonic experimentation that Malkmus is known for. Notable tracks include: the piano-driven pop song “Cast Off”; the catchy first single “Middle America”; the political statement/tribute to Freddie Gray in “Bike Lane”; the reverb-soaked anthem “Shiggy;” the robotic weirdness of “Rattler”; the woozy psychedelic track “Kite”; the rambling country-tinged “Refute”; and the slow-burning jam “Difficulties – Let Them Eat Vowels.” If you are a Pavement/Stephen Malkmus fan, then this album is for you.
