The Yawpers – Human Questions

  • April 6, 2019

Denver cowboy punk trio Yawpers follow their meticulously written French World War I concept album, Boy in a Well, with Human Question – an album that was written, rehearsed and recorded in a two-month period with Reliable Recordings’ Alex Hall (Cactus Blossoms, JD McPherson) at Chicago’s renowned Electrical Audio. The Yawpers took a more organic approach by recording live in one room, feeding off spontaneity and the collective energy, with few overdubs. Lead singer/guitarist Nate Cook used the songs as therapy, saying, “I think I’ve always been inclined to write more towards the dregs of my psyche, and explore my depressions and trauma, rather than describe a way out.” Album highlights include: the opening track “Child of Mercy”; the garage-rock fueled “Dancing on My Knees”; The Stooges-eque “Earn Your Heaven”; the gospel-soul infused “Carry Me”; the 70’s rock inspired title-track; the gentle and contemplative songs “Man As Ghost” and “Can’t Wait”; and the closing track “Where the Winters End.” Over the course of all of the Yawpers’ releases, the band keeps expanding upon their musical chops through inclusion of and experimentation with different genres including country, punk, rock and roll, gospel, indie, and blues, making Human Question one of the band’s best albums to date. – Written by JFelton
