Townes Van Zandt – Sky Blue

  • March 8, 2019

Sky Blue is a posthumous collection of Townes Van Zandt recordings to be released on what would have been the legendary songwriter’s 75th birthday, March 7th, 2019. Sky Blue is a set of unreleased songs recorded in 1973 and includes early versions of later classics, a few notable cover songs, and two unheard compositions from Van Zandt. The songs come from a recording session with journalist, musician, and close friend, the late Bill Hedgepeth in his home studio in Atlanta. Album highlights include: early versions of “Rex’s Blues” and “Pancho and Lefty”; two unheard songs called “All I Need” and the “Sky Blue”; and a couple notable covers – Ralph Stanley’s “Hills of Roane County”, Cliff Hess’s Blue Ridge Mountain Blues”, Tom Paxton’s “Last Thing On My Mind”, and Richard Dobson’s “Forever, For Always, For Certain” (recorded originally by Guy Clark). Sky Blue is an excellent collection that offers a glimpse into Townes Van Zandt’s songwriting process, the evolution of his songs and alternate arrangements of some classics. – Written by JFelton
