Vusi Mahlasela – Sing to the People

  • February 23, 2013

South African singer/songwriter/guitarist and activist Vusi Mahlasela is celebrating his longtime career as “The Voice” on his live compilation album, Sing to the People. Long known in his native country for his own struggle with apartheid and inspirational role in the anti-apartheid movement, he achieved international acclaim with his 1992 album, When You Come Back, performed for Nelson Mandela’s 1994 Presidential inauguration and in 2010’s World Cup ceremonies, and signed with Dave Matthews’ ATO Records a decade ago. Sing to the People both commemorates his 1992 release and showcases his greatest hits of African folk over the course of eleven spectacular tracks sung in multiple South African languages, including English. Recorded at the Lyric Theatre in Johannesburg, Mahlasela is in top form with his acoustic guitar playing and powerful vocals, complimented by a full band. Highlights include “Say Africa”, “River Jordan”, and “When You Come Back, Nakupenda Africa.” – Written by SMarx
