Waiting – The Van Duren Story

  • April 6, 2019

An enduring cult hero among power pop enthusiasts, Memphis musician Van Duren was a singer/songwriter that was part of the Memphis underground scene that spawned Big Star and Chris Bell. Van Duren’s music is heavily influenced by The Beatles, Badfinger, and The Raspberries, and although he never quite made it as big as his peers, he recorded a handful of records that gained him a loyal following among critics and collectors. Waiting – The Van Duren Story is a documentary made by two Big Star/Ardent studio super fans who discovered Van Duren’s work in 2016 and wanted to give a talented yet obscure musician his due. The soundtrack compilation covers Van Duren’s music from his 1978 debut through 1986 and includes work fronting various acts with rare and unreleased live and studio tracks. A few highlights include: the bittersweet “Grow Yourself Up”; his band’s Good Question’s regional hit “Jane”; and upbeat ballads like “Waiting” and “Positive (Wedding Song).” Van Duren is yet another example of a very talented musician who could not get the music industry to work in his favor. If you’re a Big Star or Ben Folds fan, be sure to watch the documentary and give the soundtrack a listen. – Written by JFelton
