Hey Marseilles – To Travels and Trunks

  • August 18, 2010

We have referenced Seattle indie/gypsy folk band Hey Marseilles in the “Similar” feature of a few reviews of other bands, and now we are giving the remastered rerelease of their 08 debut album To Travels & Trunks it’s due. The folkestral septet – which started in 06 with friends and roommates Nick Ward (vocals), Matt Bishop (guitar), and Phillip Kobernik (piano, accordion) met at the University of Washington – continues to win critics over with their sincere, lush symphonies of guitar, piano, trumpets, cellos, accordions, and sousaphone with dynamic melodies and smart lyrics laid atop. Top tracks include the jamming chamber pop “Rio” enlivened with trumpet and handclaps, the ornate seven minute journey of “Calabasas”, and new bonus track “Gasworks”. – Written by SMarx
