Bobby Bare Jr. – A Storm A Tree My Mother’s Head

  • October 7, 2010

After a four year wait, alt-country rocker Bobby Bare Jr. is back with the autobiographical album A Storm A Tree My Mother’s Head and it is one of his best to date. Long ago Bare Jr. made a name for himself beyond the shadow of his famous country music singer father, Bobby Bare, with his intelligent songwriting, talented musicianship, and edgy sense of humor, and his latest showcases them all. A Storm A Tree My Mother’s Head is a well balanced study of contrasts, from heartache to lighthearted to somber, from acoustic ballads to energetic rockers to catchy pop melodies. The title track is about a tree felled in a storm that crashed into his mother’s house, practically leaving her for dead, and it is one of the most solemn, haunting, beautiful songs Bare Jr. has ever rendered. Even the production incorporates the personal, with Bare Jr.’s friends lending a hand, including co-writing credit from the record’s co-producer David Vandervelde and collaborations with My Morning Jacket’s Tom Blankenship, Carl Broemel and Patrick Hallahan. A Storm A Tree My Mother’s Head is a must listen for any alt-country fan. – Written by JFelton
