Cat Power – Wanderer

  • December 5, 2018

Cat Power (aka Chan Marshall) releases new material fairly infrequently and when she does, the releases tend to go in a new and different directions. A lot has happened since the release of Sun, including a near-death experience due to an immune disorder shortly after that album’s debut. The following year Marshall became pregnant and in 2015 gave birth to a son and also parted ways with her longtime label Matador over creative differences. With all of these major life-changing events since Marshall’s last album, it’s clear she came out the other side stronger and more confident on Wanderer. Album standouts include: the raw piano-driven track “Nothing Really Matters”; the highly emotive cover of Rihanna’s “Stay”; the meditative “You Get”; the lilting “In Your Face”; the fragile acoustic number “Robbin Hood”; and the gorgeous yet poignant “Horizon.” Wanderer is a tender, introspective album that provides an honest and compelling portrayal of the artist and her creativity. – Written by JFelton
