Exene Cervenka – The Excitement of Maybe

  • April 25, 2011

Exene Cervenka – writer, artist and singer-songwriter best known as the front woman of the groundbreaking late 70’s/80’s L.A. punk band X – is out with her latest folk-rock album, The Excitement of Maybe. Backed by Brady Blade (drums), Christian McBride (bass), and Dave Alvin (electric guitar), as well as the occasional piano, organ and horn, Cervenka dishes out twelve finely crafted songs that speak of life, love, and leaving. The Excitement of Maybe shows Cervenka not so much reinventing her sound as expanding and exploring broader vantage points to include folk, blues, and country. It is wonderful to see one of the predecessors who paved the way for strong female alt-country / indie musicians such as Neko Case, Carolyn Mark, and Jolie Holland continue to press the boundaries of contemporary genres. – Written by JFelton
