Survivalist Tales! is an album I meant to write about last year but never got around to, but upon seeing the Holy Sons at SxSW, I was inspired to go back and write about their last release. Portland, OR based Holy Sons is Emil Amos, a prolific member of the experimental music community who also plays drums in the instrumental rock band Grails and the stoner/doom metal duo Om. Like his earlier Holy Sons albums, Amos showcases his characteristically slow paced, dark and moody dream folk songs recorded between 2007 and 2010. On Survivalist Tales!, Amos adds another dimension to his minimalist avant-folk, by integrating texture through obscure and unexpected samples, making for a richly satisfying ninth record. – Written by JFelton
