John Paul Keith – The Rhythm of the City

  • June 18, 2021

Knoxville native now Memphis based Americana singer/songwriter John Paul Keith cut his teeth with the alt-country band the Viceroys in the 1990’s and on his solo career with a string of really great albums and noteworthy side projects like the Motel Mirrors and Memphis retro-soul act Bo-Keys. Keith’s fifth LP, The Rhythm of the City follows-up 2018’s Heart Shaped Shadow, and revels in the rich and varied early rock, soul, and blues traditions of the iconic locale. Standout tracks include: the rockabilly vibed bopper “Love Love Love”; the soulful track “The Sun’s Gonna Shine Again”; the blues-tinged shuffle “If I Had Money”; the rambling, soulful number “Keep on Keep On”; the Hall & Oates-tinged “How Do I Say No”; and the bittersweet “If I Ever Get the Chance.” With The Rhythm of the City, John Paul Keith soaks in the iconic sounds of the birthplace of rock and roll, paying tribute to Memphis’s long and rich musical heritage. – Written by JFelton
