J. Mascis – Several Shades of Why

  • April 30, 2011

Several Shades of Why is a collection of quiet, thoughtful songs by Dinosaur Jr. frontman J. Mascis. On this release, the 45-year-old veteran tones down his distinct gravelly vocals and gives a slightly more expressive, softer treatment to these mostly acoustic songs. Mascis keeps it simple; most tracks are just him and a guitar. The mash-up of his expressive, melodic guitarwork, aged and weary voice, and spare, emotionally raw lyrics add up to a helluva album. Mascis breaks out an occasional guitar solo on songs like the forlorn “Is It Done” and “Where Are You,” which are like joyous interludes amidst the predominantly angst-filled themes on SSoW. All in all, it’s a beautiful album. Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew, Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses, and Kurt Vile all appear on the album as well. – Written by DBosket
