Phil Cook – People Are My Drug

  • August 15, 2018

Following his popular 2015 debut solo album Southland Mission, Phil Cook (Megafaun, Hiss Golden Messenger) is out with his second solo effort, People Are My Drug. Produced by his brother Brad Cook and backed by his band the Guitarheels – JR Bates (drums), Michael Libramento (bass) and James Wallace (piano) – the LP also features the contributions of a variety of vocalists including Chastity Brown, Tamisha Waden, Mountain Man, Amelia Meath, Molly Sable, and Alexandra Sauser-Monnig. It’s no wonder that the album is overflowing with talent and charm, as Cook’s accomplishments include performing with the likes of Mavis Staples and John Prine as well as functioning as Music Director for The Blind Boys of Alabama. The set of nine singles is steeped in blues, gospel, and country music sounds with an underlying NOLA vibe. A love letter to humanity, People Are My Drug is a fantastic gem. Standout tracks include “Miles Away”, “Deeper Kind”, and “Another Mother’s Son.” – Written by SMarx
