The Secret Sisters – Saturn Return

  • February 7, 2020

Saturn Return is the fourth album from the Alabama sibling duo The Secret Sisters (Laura Rogers and Lydia Slagle). It is a captivating, country-soul masterpiece and follows 2017’s Brandi Carlile co-produced You Don’t Own Me Anymore. Carlile makes another appearance, pushing the sisters’ boundaries musically, vocally and lyrically, resulting in a stunning set of songs that range from themes of self-reflection and intimacy to abuse and hardships. The album aptly takes its title from an astrological occurrence that takes place approximately every 29 ½ years and brings reflection on the pressure of time, and often the first awareness of one’s own mortality. Throughout the making of Saturn Return, the sisters experience a lot with the loss of both their grandmothers and the joy of becoming mothers signaling not only a musical shift but a new era for the two. Album highlights include: the rousing Celtic-tinged country rocker “Silver”; the sunny country-soul song “Nowhere, Baby”; the bluesy Brett Kavanaugh hearing inspired “Cabin”; the Laurel Canyon vibed “Hand Over My Heart”; the Carole King-esque piano ballad “Late Bloomer”; the charming country waltz “Tin Can Angel”; and the closing track “Healer in the Sky.” The Secret Sisters keep getting better and better with each album and Saturn Return is no different. – Written by JFelton
