Typhoon – A New Kind of House

  • April 30, 2011

Portland’s Typhoon had a great 2010, releasing their debut album Hunger and Thirst and supporting acts like Belle & Sebastian and Avi Buffalo. This year, the 12-piece indie orchestra have already played at SXSW and have upcoming appearances at Sasquatch and the Newport Jazz Festival. Their new EP, A New Kind of House, kicks off with “The Honest Truth,” a passionate track that showcases their energy and esprit de corps. Kyle Morton’s lead vocals are spot on, and the entire band with horns, drums, piano, guitar and strings create a full, buoyant sound that recalls The Arcade Fire. “Summer Home” starts off with some great percussion before horns take over and set the tone for this anthemic track about coming home. The rest of the EP is equally interesting and rich, and shows this Northwest band is one to watch. – Written by DBosket
