The Decemberists – The King Is Dead

  • January 20, 2011

The Decemberists’ newest album (and their sixth studio endeavor) The King Is Dead is coming out on January 18th. Following 09’s experimental rock opera The Hazards of Love, The King is Dead finds the band exploring a new and welcome sound of rootsy country with the accompaniment of Gillian Welch. Recorded in a converted barn at Pendarvis Farm (home of the annual indie Pickathon festival) just outside of Portland, OR and produced by Grammy nominated producer Tucker Martine, The King Is Dead also features Peter Buck on guitar (R.E.M.). Admittedly riddled with REM inspired touches, the album’s real strength lies in The Decemberists’ powerful mastery of the genre. Colin Meloy’s vocals are as familiar as ever, but they harmonize with Welch and the band in a surprising and reassuring way. The King is Dead is a new direction, and one I think will broaden their acclaim and appeal. – Written by JFelton
