Brooklyn four-piece The Drums have recently released their self-titled full-length after last year’s well-received Summertime! LP. Led by singer Jonathan Pierce, The Drums play ‘80s-inspired pop that pulls from The Smiths, New Order and Modern English with an American twist. Tracks like “Book of Stories” and “Me and the Moon” sound like Manchester surf-pop that would fit right in a John Hughes’ movie, while “Let’s Go Surfing” has a catchy little whistling part that repeats throughout the song, making it impossible for this writer to resist. (Along with The Black Keys’ “Tighten Up” and Peter Bjorn and John’s “Young Folks,” I’m a total sucker for whistling.) The entire album is a pretty solid set of upbeat, wishful pop that never gets campy, but rather, takes this whole ‘80s revival pretty seriously and succeeds in keeping us with them. – Written by DBosket
