Perfume Genius – Learning

  • December 14, 2010

Seattle-based singer/songwriter Mike Hadreas is Perfume Genius (whose name refers to an inside joke with his good friend) and his debut album Learning was released this past summer on Matador records to critical acclaim. It is easy to see why Hadreas is garnering accolades and developing an ardent fanbase, as he creates intensely personal songs (confessional is an understatement) of hauntingly gorgeous lo-fi indie pop. Be forewarned, though, this is not a record you just throw on your ipod and hit play; it is deeply sad and at times tormented, as Hadreas reveals shocking yet matter of fact stories of abuse, suicide, addiction and troubled relationships. His music and style has at times been compared to Antony and the Johnsons, and while Hadreas’ fragile voice resides in the upper ranges, he does not remain firmly footed in falsetto. In contrast to the lyrics, like “Look Out, look out, there are murders about”, the arrangements and instrumentation of the works are understated, featuring Perfume Genius’ accomplished piano chops as well as occasional organ and synths. Standout tracks include “When”, the title track Learning, and the ballad “Never Did.” Do yourself a favor and see what the buzz is all about. – Written by JFelton
